Fitted sheet

A fitted sheet has four corners, normally fitted with elastic, that tuck under the corners of the mattress. This holds the sheet firmly in place and provides a smooth surface to lie on. The elasticated edges make it harder to fold, and it does not lie flat unless pulled over a mattress.

Flat sheet

As the name suggests, flat sheets are flat, so they fold easily and neatly. Flat sheets also protect the mattress and make a smooth surface to lie on. A flat sheet has no elastic band, so its exact size matters less when buying.

Duvet cover

A duvet cover is a decorative and protective covering for a duvet that keeps it clean. Most duvet covers have a button or tie closure at one end.

Pillow sham

A pillow sham is a decorative pillowcase, often designed with trims, ruffles, flanges or cording. Shams can be slept on like normal pillowcases, but they are usually used as support when sitting in bed and as decoration during the day. They can be placed behind normal pillows at night or removed from the bed completely.

Pillowcase

A pillowcase is a cover for a traditional pillow that you rest your head on while sleeping. It can easily be removed and washed, and comes in different sizes depending on your pillow.
